Thieves in the Temple – Thoughts And Lessons I’ve learned, Pt 2

Thieves in the Temple – Thoughts And Lessons I’ve learned, Pt 2

Written By Shirleyne McDonald

As I was saying, here are the most common enemies to accomplishing the goals we have set for ourselves as parents, the second time around.

As I’ve called them before, these are the Thieves in the Temple…

Guilt
There is precious little time or space for it.  This emotion robs us of our ability to enjoy our mommy moments.   It doesn’t matter if you are a working or stay at home mom, married or single, young or older, we all are susceptible to it. The next time you want to take a wallow in it remember that guilt is like quick sand one dip is all it takes to suck you in.

Procrastination
We all have things we don’t want to do.  The longer we put them off the more they linger at the back of our minds taking up time and space to manufacture guilt, stress, shame.   Whatever it is, (laundry, paying the bills, exercising etc.) as Nike says ‘Just Do It’ and bask in your accomplishment.

Inflexibility
Plan and plan and be prepared to go with the flow.  Inevitably, we’ve all experienced frustration when despite our best efforts, nothing goes as expected.  As moms, we are often faced with these scenario as babies are notorious for expelling bodily fluids at the most inopportune times.  When thrown these curve balls don’t stubbornly hold on to whatever ideal you’ve envisioned.  Let it go and let the good times roll.

Self Neglect
To thine own self be kind.  Making everyone else’s needs and wants a greater priority than yours may appear to be the right thing to do. However, altruism to the point of self neglect is damaging not only to you but  the very people that you are giving your all.  Research has shown that care givers more often then not are the ones who suffer more than the ones who require care.  So be kind to yourself and be sure to attend to your needs in the midst of aiding others.

Busyness
Hang up the S on your chest.  It is so tempting to use the excuse that there just isn’t enough time in the day to do all of the things that has to be done and be the mom that we all want to be.  It is true-there will always be things to attend to, work to be done, places to be.  But , we are only given this moment to be a mom to our kids. So put down your phone, turn off the tablet, computer, tv and just be present.

Take the time to play, coo, laugh, snuggle and just be silly.  There is no substitute for the time we engage with our little ones.  Once lost, these moments are gone forever.

Ask yourself: In the end, will you regret not sending enough text messages or spending time with the ones you love?

Did I forget anything? Let me know your thoughts…
