Your Natural Winter Energy Boost

Need a spark? Leave the dark. Daylight exposure will perk you up, concludes a new study from the Netherlands. Researchers asked people to go about their business wearing something called a “Daysimeter,” which straps to your head and measures natural light exposure. (We’re picturing Geordi from Star Trek.) Turns out, the more daylight a person soaked up, the more energetic and alert he felt. Also illuminating: Those who suffered from the lowest levels of chronic fatigue tended to soak up nearly twice as much daylight as people who were perpetually worn out, the study shows. Cells in the retinas of your eyes respond to bright light by sending a signal to the alertness centers of your brain, explains study coauthor Yvonne de Kort, Ph.D …read...

5 Food Labels Decoded

You’ve heard all about sketchy ingredients lurking in your food: artificial dyes, preservatives, or high fructose corn syrup. Some are even linked to cancer and obesity. That may be why we’re willing to pay 33 percent more for items labeled “free of” one of these bad news ingredients, according to a new study from Cornell University. The research is timely. There are lots of explanations for the obesity epidemic: Genetics. Lack of sleep. The ubiquity of junk food. Now, new research in the British Medical Journal sheds light on another common, but previously unproven, theory: Eating healthy is expensive. According to the analysis of 27 studies, it costs $1.50 more per day to follow a healthy diet, compared to consuming lots of processed foods. While $1.50 might not sound like a lot, this translates to an extra $550 a year for one person to adhere to a healthy-eating plan like the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, fish, and nuts. Your pocketbook may be hit especially hard if you opt for lean meats instead of fattier cuts: Meats/protein exhibited the largest price difference between healthy and unhealthy picks—$0.29 per serving—of any supermarket category.  Read...

Fend Off a Muddled Mind

Things are looking even brighter for the sunshine vitamin. Maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D could protect against brain damage and Alzheimer’s disease as you age, according to University of Kentucky researchers. Using rats, scientists simulated human equivalents of low, normal, and high levels of the vitamin for several months. The low threshold was 10 times below what’s considered healthy–a level you could reach if you’re not getting enough D from your diet or sunlight, or if your levels are depleting due to aging, explains study author D. Allan Butterfield, Ph.D. The study found that the vitamin-deprived group experienced an …read...
