There are lots of explanations for the obesity epidemic: Genetics. Lack of sleep. The ubiquity of junk food. Now, new research in the British Medical Journal sheds light on another common, but previously unproven, theory: Eating healthy is expensive. According to the analysis of 27 studies, it costs $1.50 more per day to follow a healthy diet, compared to consuming lots of processed foods. While $1.50 might not sound like a lot, this translates to an extra $550 a year for one person to adhere to a healthy-eating plan like the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, fish, and nuts.
